Birth Stories

Sean Patrick

The past week has been a magnificent blur! Sean Patrick B made his grand entrance to the world on Tuesday, February 5th at 37 weeks gestation. Our little peanut is our most prized and precious accomplishment who we love more than I ever knew possible. Here is his birth story:

Friday February 1st

I went to my scheduled appointment with Dr. D. My blood pressure was elevated which was unusual for me since I tend to run low, if anything. Dr. Davis laid me on my left side for about 30-45 minutes until it dropped to within normal limits and sent me on my home with specific instructions to call or go to the ER if I experienced any symptoms of toxemia or pre-eclampsia. I was excited when Dr. D told me it would be smart to come to my appointments with my bags packed from now on!

Sunday February 3rd

Mid afternoon, I experienced some blurred vision, prompting me to go to Kroger to test my blood pressure. It was again high (157/95) prompting us to call the on call doctor. He sent us to Labor and Delivery where I was admitted. However, once I had gotten there, my BP was stable again. So I was monitored and again sent home after several hours and normal labs.

Tuesday Feb 5th

I was certain today would be the day! With my bags packed and Justin at my side, I arrived to my appointment bright and early! We were not surprised to learn that my BP was again sky high at 145/105-resulting in immediate admission to the Johnston Willis hospital by 9 am I was checked-baby was in perfect position and I was given pitocian to begin to induce labor.

By 6 pm I had only dilated 1 cm but was proud to have labored that long without any medication. At 7 pm I was up to 3 cm, and Justin and I phoned our parents to go ahead and come to the hospital. (they live nearby) At 8 pm, Dr. Davis broke my water and did an ultrasound only to learn that the baby had flipped and was now breech!!!!! Given my lack of progress in dilating, unpredictable blood pressure and now his position, she recommended that we go ahead with a c-section.

I was DEVASTATED!!!!! But what could I do? Not a thing. "It is what it is", and the most important thing was for the baby to be healthy. At 8:45pm, I was given the spinal anesthesia and prepped for my c-section after laboring for 12 hours. Justin was by my side the whole time. I had my music with me as planned and Sean Patrick entered the world at 9:07 pm to John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy".

Sean Patrick B. weighed in at 5 lbs 14 ounces; 18 ¾ inches long. I've never known love like this before - being a mommy is amazing and I love every last moment of it.

I was new to Richmond when I took my first round of classes with Leslie and baby #1 (now twenty one months). I'm now almost 5 mos. pregnant with #2 and will sign-up soon. I loved being around other pregnant women and embracing our natural state. I also met some great friends in my neighborhood through the classes, and we really have a wonderful foundation to our friendship through experiencing the class together.
