Birth Stories
Audrey Michele and Macy Sophia
At 39 1/2 weeks, my beautiful twin girls were finally born!
Audrey Michele at 2:07 am on 6/22/07 weighing 5 lbs. 15 oz. and 20 1/2 inches long.
Macy Sophia at 2:08 am on 6/22/07 weighing 6 lbs. 9 oz. and 20 3/4 inches long.
Last Thursday morning, at my visit with Dr. Fitzhugh, I still hadn't dilated so he decided to go ahead and break my water. We had 2 hours until we met him at the hospital and I was so excited I came home and cleaned the house like a mad woman. Who knows when I'd get to it again! Anyway, we got to the hospital, were admitted, and the nurse put one of those monitors around my belly which itched like crazy! After the doctor broke my water, he left and was going to give me time for labor to kick in. That's when Nancy, my midwife, showed up with "the cocktail". I drank it around 8:00 pm and within an hour was beginning labor pitiocin free! After a while, I was at 2 cm and then labor really kicked in. The techniques we learned from Leslie's workshop were so valuable and all the breathing and physical exercises from yoga truly aided me in labor. My midwife was a dream and was so helpful as she guided me through each contraction. Luckily, my nurse let me off the monitors for 45 minutes each hour and so I as able to move around freely during contractions. I especially liked sitting on the yoga ball in the shower!
After 5 hours, I was 4 cm and in my own little world of contractions. I kept hearing in my head "get through each contraction one by one" and that's what really helped. However, the doctor was back and watching the monitor of the twin's heart rates. The first twin, Audrey, was head down and progressing beautifully. The second twin, Macy, was breech, and although we had originally thought we could have a natural childbirth, she had other plans. Her heart rate kept going down every contraction which really worried everyone. Nancy told me what was happening and that we needed to do an epidural to get ready for an emergency cesarean. She was right with me the whole time and her amazing calm and focus got me and my husband through the whole thing.
In the operating room it took two attempts to get the epidural to work. After I was numb, I felt giddy and remember holding my husband's hand as we realized we were going to meet our girls in a matter of seconds! First came Audrey and then Macy. They were brought around to me bright eyed and looking around. Later in the labor room, they were able to latch on and begin feeding right away.
The whole birthing experience was unbelievable! Although recovering from a cesarean hasn't been pleasant, I feel that I am bouncing back due to all the yoga! I am so grateful for the wonderful classes, support, encouragement and the friends I made. The girls are so beautiful and life at home the first week has been a lovely, amazing, whirlwind! I wish you all the best and hope to see you soon!
All my best,
Katherine S.
